The 2 W’s

Amid this covid-19 pandemic, lets try something new 🙂

I’ve always been horrible at talking about myself on any context. I’ve always been shy and just avoided any kind of scenario that required my vulnerability to show. So lets begin.

I’m not going to go back into electronic music, genres and the ‘beginning’ of this walk with music, cuz that’s a longer story for another time. Let’s talk about something that doesn’t have cosmic roots and reasons for life and death.

So, what about DJ names?

It’s always been interesting seeing what people think the DJ alias meant or was trying to convey. Every brand, name, category, or our desire to classify things have always been a part of culture as a form of communicating values or a concept of ideas. But what’s that old ideology? Does a name give you meaning or does oneself give meaning to a name? Legacy perhaps? Meh.

Titus1. What does it even mean? It’s funny because it is actually the second DJ name I stuck with after a few years of running on digital radio shows playing happy hardcore as yup, you guessed it… Euphorian Angel. Ugh. What a name… lol. Don’t ask it was the quirky processing of finding a meaningful name to a genre that required a lot of passion to be a fan of, hey I still love the stuff 🙂

But why Titus1? Well I’ve always been a very deep individual, maybe by the influence and design of being under a household of religion. Growing up going to church and bible camp for years definitely contributed to this soulful search in most things I did. The choice of picking a name that carried the things I believed in and wanted associated to the journey were a definite consideration. Always believing synchronicities and wanting a DJ name that you would have to research for an understanding definitely fueled the path.

So there I was, one sunday-afternoon sitting in church. It occurred to me living this pseudo double-life hidden from my family, that I did carry a lot of value the bible had to me in context. I had gravitated to the Book of Titus , as my pastor spoke its words. Not only was it so cool that Titus translated into Spanish (being my heritage) meant Tito, but the cool synchronicity that I, myself, Tito enjoyed that small excerpt and the meaning of its words that I’ve carried for so long without even knowing it. The epistole book of Titus and it’s words had so much meaning, and the words were the description of every I thought was honourable as a person to live by. I swear it was a sign from God. lol.

I knew then and there I had to choose this DJ name Titus, and why the 1, cuz of the fact there was only one book of it in the bible, and I hung on ever word of it. So to reference it in its complete entirety – it was only right I should reference it from it’s beginning as Titus verse 1:1.

Okay, okay, kind of weird or kind of boring perhaps, but hey I’m talking about my story here. Give me a break! lol

So, for some of you out there, no, unfortunately it doesn’t mean ‘Tightest One’ or anything along those lines but feel free to have it mean whatever you want it to mean to you. If you’ve been on this walk with me – in my journey with music, I totally get it 🙂 Our memories are an investment, good or bad, as long as we continue to have passion for it and recognize why music saved our lives, we can always relate as we are in this together.

I chose Titus1, not because it was a brand or had some kind of marketing potential (trust me it’s not the best name choice for branding sake lol) but because I wanted to create something that could bring my flock, my people, my geeks, my nerds, my outcasts in life because I’ve always felt like one too. I wanted to bring all my values of identity into one full source of artist expression. Not about genre of music, or style of individuals, but just anyone out there who was feeling what I was feeling, even if it was just one person.

So, in the end, what does it even mean. I guess that’s changed too, it started out with one outlook and became something else. I became the outlet to seek connection. Connection to passion and love for the music that has become the soundtrack to us all.

So… that’s all for now. Who knows, maybe I’ll write something more about my roots one day. But let’s save that for another day

To be continued….?

Much love and respect. Tito aka Titus1.
